How To Create A Facebook Group for your Neighborhood Cafe
- From your home page, go to the Groups section on the left side menu and click on Add Group.
- Click Create New Group.
- A pop-up box will appear, where you’ll be able to add a group name, add members and select the privacy setting for your group.
- Chose CLOSED for your Group’s privacy: Anyone can see the group and who’s in it. Only members see posts.
- Click the Create button when you’re finished.
- Once the group is created, you will be taken to the group’s page. To get started click the three dots at the top right of the page and select Edit Group Settings. From here you can add a group description, set a group email address, add a group picture and manage members.
Who can see my private Group? What can they see?
- All Facebook users can see that your Group exists. They can see who is in the Group and read the Description you’ve provided. But ONLY members you have approved can see the posts.
What can Members do?
- Group members can write posts, leave comments, add photos and videos, ask questions, create events, and add documents. This is a safe, secure, convenient way to stay in touch between Cafés!
How can I see my Group?
- You can see the Group posts by clicking the Group on the left side of your Facebook Home page (like this example). Members of the Group will also see posts on their News Feed.

- The Café Hostess has complete control of the Group.
- As administrator, the Café Hostess can:
- Add and approve members
- Change the Description
- Add or remove other Administrators
- Change the settings for the Group

Managing Your Facebook Group
Adding Members
To add members to the Group:
- Go to the Group
- Click “+ Add Friends to Group” in the right column
- Add your friends’ names
You can only add your Facebook friends to the group. If your guests are not your Facebook friends, they may request to join your Group. The Hostess will confirm any request to join the Group.
Communicating with Your Cafe Group
Use the sharing tool at the top of the Group to write a post, add a photo or video, ask a question, or even add a file (a Bible study handout, for example). If you’d like, you can tag other members of the Group in your post. This is useful for prayer requests and reminders about Snacks. You can also send a Facebook Message to everyone in your group!
Poll Your Cafe Group
- Click Ask Question at the top of the Group.
- Enter your question and add poll options if you wish.
- Click Ask Question to share it with the Group. Only Group members can answer questions or vote on polls that appear in a Group.
Your Group Notification Settings
Group members are notified about all new posts in a Group unless they choose to restrict their Group notification settings. Only Group members will be notified about things posted in the Group.
To change notification settings for your Café Group, go to the Group and click the Notifications button at the top right of the page. For more advanced notification settings, select Settings from this menu. As the Hostess, it is recommended that you receive an email for All Activity.
For Guests Who Don’t Have Facebook…
When you have a Guest who is not on Facebook, you can make sure she’s in the loop and connected to your Café in the following ways:
If she has email:
- Forward her the email notifications you receive when other members of the Group make posts or comments
- Paste your own comments into an email message
If she does not have email:
- Occasionally print the Group page and mail it or hand-deliver it to her
- Call her with updates
- Sit down face to face and find out what’s on her heart!
