In uncertain seasons of personal crisis, cultural chaos, or global catastrophe, we wonder if life will ever be the same. Have you ever gazed into your foggy “new normal” and felt hopeless, lost, dazed, or despairing?

Or maybe it’s just me?

Here’s a surprising way to escape these hopeless feelings: just hope less.

Hope less in the temporal,
hope fully in the eternal.
Hope less in the physical,
hope fully in the spiritual.

I didn’t make it up.

Therefore,
preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded,
set your hope fully on the grace
that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 1:13

The “therefore” is there for the suffering and salvation that are both promised. This requires an action plan and a clear head, the only way we can stop wavering between hopeless fears and set our hope fully on God’s faithfulness.

Oh, what a difference a space makes!

When we pry these emotional words apart, we invite God’s power to enter in.

Hope less about plans and schemes
Hope less about broken dreams

Hope less about beauty fading
Hope less about love abating

Hope less about friendships ignored
Hope less about feelings scorned

Hope less about freedom tossed
Hope less about rights lost

Hope less about money and wealth
Hope less about waning health

Hope less about circumstances
Hope less about missed chances

Hopelessly these things deceive us
Hope fully just in Jesus.
